What Might an “OS for Education” Look Like? Exploring Kira’s Latest AI Platform
In a landscape where the average US school district uses roughly 3,000 software tools (two-thirds of which go unused), Kira is betting that consolidation, not addition, is the path forward.
On March 3, Kira gathered teachers, district administrators, edtech leaders, investors, and policymakers in New York City for the public launch of its 2.0 platform. After nearly five years of continuous development, Kira’s co-founders Andrea Pasinetti and Jagriti Agrawal pulled back the curtain on what they call an “Operating System (OS) for education”: a perspective on a possible foundation for how AI can serve teaching and learning at scale.
The event was notable not just for what was shown — live demos of AI-generated curriculum, real-time student diagnostics, and intelligent tutoring tools — but for the philosophy underlying it. Kira’s pitch isn’t efficiency for efficiency’s sake. It’s about leveraging tools to redirect focus on connection and relationship building in the classroom.
Kira 2.0: What’s New
The 2.0 release is available now to all Kira users and new signups. Here’s a breakdown of what the latest release includes:
Student Intelligence Layer
Student Atlas
The headline feature of the launch, Student Atlas is a longitudinal student profile that tracks skill mastery, zones of proximal development, and tiered intervention needs across a student’s entire academic career. Teachers can query the Atlas conversationally to surface insights — which students are struggling most, on which skills, and at what level of severity — and act on them immediately by generating personalized resources directly from the same interface.The system automatically disaggregates state standards into granular skills and rolls them up to domain-level insights, all in the background, with no manual tagging required from teachers.
AI-Powered Standards Tagging
Every question and activity in a lesson or course is automatically tagged to relevant skills and standards — including Bloom’s taxonomy levels and difficulty — with no manual intervention required. Materials can also be retagged retroactively, meaning student performance data can be re-evaluated against a new standards framework without students needing to redo any work.
Curriculum Generation Engine
Course Studio
During the live demo, the team showcased eight complete courses being built — including AP Calculus BC, AP Physics, AP Music Theory, Health Science, Cybersecurity, and multiple CTE pathways — in under 30 minutes. With Kira, educators can generate a full, standards-aligned course from scratch, including a scope and sequence, 50-minute scaffolded lessons, interactive activities, assessments, and Desmos calculator integrations where relevant. To contextualize the time savings: a typical well-resourced district curriculum team spends roughly three years and significant investment building a single course to a comparable standard.
Coming soon: the ability to import existing courses from any LMS, Google Docs, or even photographs of handwritten notes, then translate, rescaffold, resequence, or remix them via chat.
Instruction and Assessment System
AI-Powered Assessments
Assessments can be built from course content, uploaded PDFs (including existing state-level tests), or from scratch. The tool includes proctoring functionality, real-time class performance statistics, and high-frequency error analysis. All results feed directly back into each student’s Atlas.
Coming soon: practice SAT and ACT experiences that generate a predictive score and a personalized course of study to close the gap.
AI Grading and Feedback
Kira’s grading interface supports everything from multiple choice auto-grading to rubric-based AI grading for free-response and essay questions. All grades are held for teacher review before being released to students — a deliberate design choice that keeps teachers in control of the final judgment. Student-facing explanations are generated for every answer, correct or incorrect.
AI Tutor
An always-on tutoring layer embedded across a student’s full curriculum, designed around the Socratic method and intelligent tutoring system principles. The AI Tutor is aware of each student’s learning profile and will not provide guidance misaligned with what the student does or does not know. Teachers can turn it on or off and personalize its behavior by class or student. A next-generation version — capable of modifying content in real time based on student performance mid-session — is in active development.
ChatPods
ChatPods are an AI activity that guides students through learning conversations — giving information, asking questions, and checking understanding as they go. Teachers can observe conversations in real time, identify emerging misconceptions, and step in where guidance is needed.
New Teacher Dashboard
A unified interface with a central chat that serves as the nerve center for teacher workflows: querying student data, creating and assigning resources, adjusting scope and sequence, and more. The goal is for a teacher to wonder “Can I do this in Kira?” and be able to execute on that intention directly from the same chat.
What This Signals for AI in Education
The Kira 2.0 launch is worth watching not just as a product release, but as a signal of where the broader AI-in-education conversation is heading. A few patterns worth noting:
From Tools to Operating Systems
The edtech market has long been characterized by fragmentation — point solutions for every problem, often poorly integrated. Kira’s explicit positioning as an “OS for education” represents a meaningful shift: the bet that the future belongs to platforms that consolidate core functions (curriculum, assessment, intervention, analytics) rather than adding to the pile. Brandon Chitty, Executive Director of Innovation at Broken Arrow Public Schools, put it plainly at the launch event: “I see a vision where this takes over a good handful of our 72 instructional softwares within a year and a half.”
Data-Driven Personalization, at Scale
For years, multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) have been a goal in theory and expensive in practice. Kira’s Student Atlas automates the underlying infrastructure — skill tagging, mastery tracking, tiered intervention flags — that districts have historically spent years of time and seven figures of budget building manually. The promise: the same depth of insight a great teacher carries about individual students, delivered systematically and at scale.
Curriculum as a Living Document
The economics of traditional curriculum publishing are broken — a Calculus BC textbook can cost $250 per student, takes years to develop, and arrives already obsolete. Kira’s Course Studio challenges that model directly, compressing years of development into minutes and producing materials that can be updated, translated, and resequenced in real time. Kira is explicit that AI-generated courses require expert review before being assigned to students — but the time and cost savings are still substantial.
“At a Glance” Intelligence for Leaders
One of the most frequently raised questions during the Q&A at the launch event was about administrative visibility: school-level and district-level rollups of student performance data. Kira confirmed that a class and school atlas is something they are curious about building, and a parent portal is also on the near-term roadmap. The ability to query aggregated performance data conversationally represents a meaningful shift in how district and school leaders can access and act on information in real time, rather than waiting months for state assessment results.
Prioritizing Humanity in Instruction
Perhaps the most resonant thread running through the event was the argument that the right application of AI is not more screen time — it’s less friction on the administrative and analytical work that crowds out human connection in teaching. As Chitty framed it: “The real teaching and learning is a human effort. I see this as a tool to make us more human in our instruction.”
Bottom Line
The question of whether a platform like this can drive measurable student outcomes at scale remains open; Kira acknowledges as much and has committed to longitudinal third-party studies across its largest deployments. But for anyone tracking where serious AI-in-education is heading, and what a mature, pedagogically grounded platform could look like, this is a product worth paying close attention to.

Before jumping to adopt this new platform, as fabulous as it sounds, I am thinking there needs to be a national council on the adoption of AI technology elements and a timeline for learning and using. AI infrastructure could deeply influcence the ability of teachers/districts, all educators in getting access to the data lakes being built by 5 industry leaders. I am NOT seeing representation of education in a meaningful manner. Get some perspectives beyond the business use of AI and figure out how to build a more humane and sustainable pathway for the cognitive development of humans in school and beyond for educators K-12 and in Higher Ed into the corporate workplace.
A coordinated system that closes the gap between reaction and response, across learning, life, and digital environments sounds like a good Ed OS!
